the singularity of being and nothingness
Sara Bareilles – Little Voice
I know that my "tough guy" reputation is going to endure significant damage because of this post; nonetheless, I will press onward.
It is a bit of a secret that I write CD reviews for my wife's website, maryandstella.com. Every Tuesday, I find a new album, listen to it a billion times, and then write something fairly contrived–but with big words–that sounds like an exhaustively knowleable review.
Anyway, last week, I reviewed Sara Bareilles' new (and first) album, "Little Voice." Approaching this CD, I was a bit skeptical. It is not secret that I do not particularly care for female artists. There are notable exceptions, of course (like Jewell, Sheryl Crow, Ella Fitzgerald, etc.), but on the whole I prefer the music my own gender makes. So it was with significant trepidation that I logged onto Napster to listen.
To completely destroy any potential suspense, I was absolutely blown away. From beginning to end, Little Voices is quite superb. While I was expecting the same warmed over Kelly Clarkson/Mandy Moore fare, Bareilles' album is incredibly interesting from a musical perspective. On some tracks, like my favorite 'Gravity,' Bareilles is vulnerable, sensitive and deliciously melodic. On others, like 'Morningside,' the pace is entirely changed to straight-up funk-soul. The listerner is never made comfortable as the album progresses and is left, at the end, with the impression of something good and fresh having occurred.
But where Bareilles shines the most is in her lyricism, with communicating smart wordsmanship and thoughtful structuring. Combined with completely complementary production on every song, Bareilles' words and music blend together nearly seamlessly to create a powerful, meaningful and memorable listening experience.
Anyway, I don't have much more to say. To understand what I mean, you should really listen to it. I will leave you with my favorite lyric from the entire album — "One Sweet Love":
Just about the time the shadows call
I undress my mind and dare you to follow
Paint a portrait of my mystery
Only close my eyes and you are here with me
A nameless face to think I see
To sit and watch the waves with me till they re gone
A heart I'd swear I'd recognize is made out of
my own devices'.
could I be wrong?
The time that I've taken, I pray is not wasted
Have I already tasted my piece of one sweet love?
Sleepless nights you creep inside of me
Paint your shadows on the breath that we share
You take more than just my sanity, you take my reason not to care.
No ordinary wings I'll need
The sky itself will carry me…back to you
The things I dream that I can do I'd open up
The moon for you–just come down soon
The time that I've taken
I pray is not wasted
Have I already tasted my piece of one sweet love?
Ready and waiting for a heart worth the breaking
But I'd settle for an honest mistake in the name of
one sweet love.
Savor the sorrow to soften the pain
Sip on the southern rain
As I do, I don't look don't touch don't do anything
But hope that there is a you.
The earth that is the space between,
I'd banish it from under me–to get to you.
Your unexpected love provides my solitary's suicide–oh I wish I knew

CDs are a Hassle
about 14 years ago - 2 comments
For about the last 9 years, my wife and I have been lugging around giant, fabric-bound cases of CDs. While most of the music we listen to nowadays is delivered via iTunes or MOG, we’ve held onto these portable discs of sound…and I’m not really sure why. Sure, there are some gems that I’ve found–albums…

Favorite Albums of 2009
about 15 years ago - No comments
2009 was a bit of a disappointment for me musically. It's not that there wasn't a ton of great music released…it's more that I allowed myself to get far to busy to truly enjoy a reasonable amount of it. This travesty is something I intend to resolve over the next year. Anyway, of the stuff…

CD Review – Emery's "I'm Only a Man"
about 17 years ago - 6 comments
Within the last six months, my little brother has introduced me to some seriously cool music. One of my favorite bands from this "education" is Emery, a hard-hitting "screamo" band hailing from the Tooth and Nail label. Instantaly I fell in love with their unique, emotive style and have practically memorized their first two full-length…

CD Review – Rascal Flatt's "Still Feels Good"
about 17 years ago - No comments
Since their self-titled debut in 2000, Rascal Flatts has consistently and with ever-growing force become a presence within the country-pop crossover music scene to be reckoned with. Boasting such awards as two-time CMT Vocal Group of the Year, CMT Group/Duo of the Year, and an Emmy for the unforgettable phenomenon of “Bless the Broken Road,”…

CD Review – Pat Monahan's "Last of Seven"
about 17 years ago - 1 comment
If you've listened to the radio in the last 10 years, you know about Train. With mega hits such as the frantically original "Meet Virginia", the year-long chart-occupying "Drops of Jupiter" and the funky feel-good anthem "Get to Me," Train has made an indelible and enduring mark on popular music. While every album is ultimately…

CD Review – Sarah Blasko's "What The Sea Wants The Sea Will Have"
about 17 years ago - No comments
The perrenial liability of pop music is the tendancy of over-produced, singles'-charts-minded arrangements to betray lyrical meaning, as the value of words is sacrificed on the alter of commercial viability. Such a depraved environment craves seriousness, originality and a disavowal of the all-too-great temptation to jettison thought, form and artistry for air-play. In many ways,…

CD Review – Suzy Bogguss' "Sweet Danger"
about 17 years ago - No comments
In the mid-90's, Suzy Bogguss was a powerhouse name in country music, garnering a half-dozen top-ten singles, numerous awards, and even the coveted Academy of Country Music's award for Top New Female Vocalist. However, as with all things, time and age took their toll. After a brief hiatus from the music scene to raise her…

CD Review – Caedmon's Call "Overdressed"
about 17 years ago - 3 comments
Boasting a career spanning over a decade and a half, Caedmon's Call is, without question, one of Christian alternative music's most successful and beloved never-to-go-mainstream bands. Overdressed, the eighth full-length release from the band, continues the band’s legacy of folk-inspired alternative rock and welcomes back Derek Webb who left the band in 2003 to pursue…

CD Review – Over the Rhine's "The Trumpet Child"
about 17 years ago - No comments
Over 17 years in the making, The Trumpet Child—the 13th studio album from Cincinnati-based husband and wife duo (Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist) Over the Rhine —is a late-coming, albeit welcome and invigorating redefinition of the band’s sound. Known for their gritty emotionalisim and often dark aesthetic, The Trumpet Child is a sort of reawakening…

CD Review – Fuel's "Angels and Demons"
about 17 years ago - 1 comment
In the post-grunge rock fallout of the late 90's and early 00's, Fuel became a mainstay for rock fans, fusing the emotive spirit of Nirvana's musical revolution with a progressive and compelling sound that made alternative rock a viable option in the face of the rise of rap and hip-hop. Although bands are always more…

Exist, as long as you don’t start putting flowery things on your avatar, I doubt your “tough guy” rep. will suffer loss.
This Sara chick is quite the wordsmith…do you know if she writes her own music? If she does, I am duly impressed.
I was absolutely blown away.
OK, where is Exist and what have you done with him. Exist doesn’t get “blown away”…it’s outside of his character. ;D

As far as I am aware, she wrote all of the songs on the album. Pretty great stuff, IMO.

The one contra internet Explorer…
about -1917 years ago
Ah, yes. That one. It’s not actually a post.
It’s more of a public service announcement. In my line of work, I grow tired of extra programming hours simply to accommodate the ridiculously poor support of Internet Explorer 6. Therefore, I designed this site to automatically route first-time IE 6 (or lower) users to that page, hoping that they will come to their senses and download a legitimate browser.
Moreover, when the visitor hits that page, a cookie is created on their machine that tells their IE6 not to go there on subsequent visits.
With that said, WHY ARE YOU USING IE 6 (or below) ?!!?!?!
Some think I’m a heretic…!

Get firefox now. Or at least netscape 9. Or even [[[shudders]]] upgrade to IE 7 (no link for that, you have to work for it).
about -1917 years ago
You know Exist, I’ve also heard of the maladies of Internet Explorer from other technically savvy guys such as yourself…I shall adhere to your admonishment. Hey…thanks for putting up these technical nuggets for us knuckle heads. 😉

Scribe- if- because you have lost all reason and choose to side with all that is evil- you choose to get IE7, E-D does have a big shiny button down below to click on to go and download it. Damn shininess.
ED- shame on you for being an enabler.

Done and [hits Enter tab on keyboard] done! Nah, I went the way of the firefox…it seemed like a more viable option considering that it was Exist’s primary option. Heck I even switch the browser on my wife’s laptop (I hope I don’t end up in the “doghouse” for it…)

Perhaps he is allowing people to pick their poison…

It is good to see that reason, civility and morality have won the day. I am assured that you will find the change both welcome and advantageous to your excursions on the world wide interweb (that’s from “For Your Consideration”).

There are myriad ways to hasten utter dissolution. I try to provide as many options towards that end as possible.

All exists lead to assimilation. Welcome to the carnival of terror! (exist does his best maniacal laugh).

web 2.0 = shiny. When will it end? Everything on the internet looks like it’s liquid and cool. How I miss the days of Windows 95, where everything was in nice, little, convenient grey boxes. Except you could change the theme to ‘storm’ and get eye-burning purple, or ‘rainy day’ and get even more depressed than 1995 era grunge-emo rock. If that’s possible. Oh, and then there was ‘plum.’ I miss plum. Yeah, that’s more depressing.
FYI- your post counter system is all messed up. I should have well over 20 posts. In fact, I should have made the rank of demi-god by now, whereas I a merely a squire, which is barely below forest-nymph and barely above Sanjaya.
At least make me a Cracken.
