the singularity of being and nothingness
A Concert of Cosmological SIgnificance
Yes, the planets are once again aligned and I am gracing the unwashed masses with another concert
The theme of this one is "The Geometry of Eternity," a concept based upon a song of the same name. In this song, I connect C.S. Lewis' imagery of eternity (The Great Divorce) with some further reflections of my own. I suggest in this song that the "geometry" of eternity has little to do with the location of saint and sinner in terms of proximity to heaven or hell as materialistically conceived realities, but is rather realized in the relatedness of the individual to God and the attendant consequences of the same. Here is a snippet:
"Imagine a time, with no time / And separation without a space in between / To stand right next to life, and yet still die / To be sustained, but never fulfilled"
The rest of the songs amount to a sort of theological escapade wherein I walk through some of the more difficult and/or interesting theological issues of Christian belief, including but not limited to the nature of faith, eschatological frustration, atonement theology, human sinfulness, epistemological shifts in Christian thinking, etc.
See you there. Or else.

I hope it goes well. “The Great Divorce” is one of my favorite books. While I was reading lyrics to your song I held a lit lighter in the air by the computer. Since there was no tune there I imagined the words with the tune to freebird. Then I imagine the climactic build up…
“And this bird can be sustained…. And this bird can be sustained… Oh Lord I’m sustain-ayainayainayianed…” (guitar solo)
Ok, I gotta go preach.

Sounds great, Joel. This is your old BSG buddy typing, by the way. I’m sorry, however, to see that your mind has been poisoned by apologetic drivel like that puked out by C.S. Lewis and his ilk. 🙂

LoL, well, it is difficult to work “Spong” into a song without feeling quite ridiculous.

I have to disagree. I must point out the obvious. Spong rhymes with thong. You can’t go wrong with a song about Spong’s thong. So long.

You are right, of course. I will work on that this afternoon. Moreover, I might make it into an audio-visual affair, as I–interestingly enough–have some spring break pictures that would be quite apropos (e~d shudders at the thought).

Your incessant rhyming is antithetical to existence itself; indeed, even the very thought of being.. Surely the ground-of-all-being will pull itself out from under you. And thus I applaud you.

what’s so bad about Spong’s sandals? It’s surely good to have a piece of fabric or plastic to fit snugly and hopefully securely between certain body parts, so that the gap, however large or distinct it may be, is not exposed to public view. Are you saying Spong has big toes?

So how did the concert go? Did Spong show up in a thong? If so, did you look at his dong? Okay, that’s just wrong.

The concert went well. There were actually quite a few people there (well, having more than the 4 who were at the last one is considered “quite a few”), and overall I had a good time. In a moment of unplanned levity, I played the very first song that I ever wrote—“Flame Retardant Christmas Tree”—which was met with rapturous applause…more than any other song (*sigh*).
Interestingly, I had someone from the music ‘biz in attendance. One of the audience informed me that an individual who had played keyboards in Chris Tomlin’s band (mega-Christian-worship-leader / anti-Christ) had graced me with his presence. I’m one step closer to a major record contract, no doubt…
So yeah, that’s about it.
Oh! Spong did show up, sans the thong. Shudder****
